Yokai Immersive Exhibition TOKYO brings Japan's legendary monsters into the digital age when it opens this spring. Running from March 27th to June 28th, 2026, this large-scale immersive exhibition transforms centuries-old folklore into a fully walk-through art experience using cutting-edge visual technology.
Held at the Warehouse Terrada G1 Building in Shinagawa, the exhibition blends historic monster art from the Edo and Meiji periods with modern tools such as 3DCG animation, projection mapping, holographic screens, and detailed three-dimensional sculptures. Visitors can step directly into a moving world inspired by classic monster scrolls and folktales, where demons, river creatures, mountain spirits, and mischievous household beings appear to roam freely around you.
Unlike a traditional museum, this exhibition is designed to be experienced with your whole body. Guests can walk through immersive digital spaces, take photos and videos with animated yokai, and feel as though they have wandered into a living picture scroll. Realistic sculptures add another layer to the experience, allowing visitors to examine the textures and expressions of these creatures up close.
There is also an educational element woven throughout the exhibition. Original prints and artworks on loan from respected museums and libraries introduce the history of yokai culture and explain how these stories developed over time. The displays also explore how yokai continue to influence modern pop culture, from anime and games to contemporary art.
