Turning demon adversaries into allies

If you're looking for a truly unique way to experience Setsubun in Japan, Onioshidashi Park in Gunma Prefecture is hosting a one-of-a-kind bean-throwing ceremony high in the mountains. This special event takes place at Asamayama Kannon Hall, a branch temple of Tokyo's historic Kan'ei-ji Temple, located more than 1,300 meters above sea level.

Unlike most Setsubun celebrations where people traditionally throw beans to drive demons away, Onioshidashi Park flips the idea on its head. Here, demons are considered protectors rather than villains. Instead of casting out bad luck, the focus is on welcoming good fortune and positive energy for the year ahead. Visitors are invited to throw beans from the dramatic mountaintop stage while making wishes for health, happiness, and prosperity.

The concept is rooted in ancient beliefs where creatures like dragons and demons were once worshipped as guardian spirits. Demons were also associated with the ox and tiger in the zodiac and were thought to protect people from misfortune. This symbolism is still visible throughout the park, including demon-themed roof tiles and guardian statues placed at key entrances to ward off evil.

The setting also adds to the magic. Asamayama Kannon Hall overlooks the rugged lava landscape created by Mount Asama's past eruptions, making this one of the most scenic Setsubun celebrations in the country. Two imposing guardian statues stand at the park's main gate, reinforcing the idea that demons here are allies watching over visitors.

As a special bonus, the first 100 visitors to arrive on the day will receive free peanuts for the ceremony. Onioshidashi Park is open daily from morning until late afternoon, with admission fees starting at 700 JPY for adults and 500 JPY for children.

เส้นทาง

Onioshidashi Park can be accessed by bus from Karuizawa, with the journey taking just over 30 minutes.
