It is believed that travelers who walk the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, after all the suffering and effort of hiking for weeks at a time along arduous paths, will reach internal peace and a one-way ticket to paradise, whatever that is. I am not going to lie; I did not do the whole pilgrimage thing. Not even close. I am far too weak, so I doubt I reached any spiritual salvation, but I got something better, a view of what I consider to be one of the most impressive landscapes in the world: the Nachi-no-otaki waterfall, seen from near Seiganto-ji temple and Nachi Taisha shrine. I guarantee you will never want to leave that spot. The Nachi-no-otaki fall, with its 133 meters of vertical drop, is the highest waterfall in Japan, and it has been a place of worship for centuries.
