Aquas Aquarium

Big aquarium tanks & beluga shows opposite Hamada beach

Aquas is part of the Iwami Seaside Resort complex in the Hamada beach area of Shimane prefecture. It is quite a large aquarium across the street from the main white sandy beach, connected by an artistic bridge. Behind the aquarium, you will find some small restaurants, a park area as well as the Aquasland adventure playground full of roller slides and climbing fun for kids. It is a great option if the weather is not great or if you are looking for a cool, relaxing break from the sun. The facility is very modern, comfortable and well-maintained.

Inside, there are 3 floors filled with small aquariums of exotic fish and sea creatures. There are over 10,000 fish and sea creatures on display. In the small tanks, our favorites are the octopus, jellyfish, sardines, squid, eels and clown fish in the beautiful sea anemones.

You will find many people spending a long time taking in all the activity in the large tanks and wandering under the tank through maze-like glass tunnels. This huge tank is full of sharks, manta rays and larger creatures,- isn't it astounding how they all get along.

In a separate big tank of its own is the beluga whale, "shiroi-iruka" or white dolphin as it is called in Japan. These are really special creatures and this is the only aquarium in this part of Japan to host them. The belugas are resident superstars who are each given names, their own collection items sold in the gift shop and have become the main attraction. They are famous for being able to blow bubbles in ring shapes on cue during their shows. Penguins and seals are also star attractions, and perform in shows at least a few times each day.

It is possible to borrow wheelchairs or child strollers free of charge for use in Aquas. It is also possible to come back again for no extra charge later in the day, which is a nice option if it becomes too busy to enjoy or if you want to have a break at the park, beach or restaurants outside. Free audio guides are available for foreign guests and available in English, Chinese, Korean and Russian.
