Nestled deep in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, Takaragawa Onsen has long been considered one of Japan’s most scenic hot spring retreats. Now, the onsen has received international recognition after being named one of the world’s six dreamiest hot springs by Mental Floss, a US-based online publication known for its culture, science, history and travel features.

In its recent roundup of spectacular hot springs around the globe, the magazine praised Takaragawa Onsen for its breathtaking natural setting and year-round appeal.

Located beside a rushing river and surrounded by forest, the onsen is particularly famous for its expansive outdoor baths, or rotenburo, which allow guests to soak while immersed in the changing scenery of the Japanese countryside. According to Mental Floss, the baths are especially magical during autumn, when the surrounding mountains burst into shades of red and gold, and in winter, when visitors can relax in steaming waters while snow falls around them.

The publication also noted that the onsen offers a very different experience depending on the season. Spring and summer bring lush greenery and opportunities for hiking in the surrounding forest, while clear nights throughout the year make stargazing from the baths another major draw.

Mental Floss also touched on Japan’s deep-rooted onsen culture, explaining that hot springs have traditionally been associated with relaxation, healing and spiritual wellness. Modern research increasingly supports the health benefits of hot spring bathing, with studies suggesting hydrotherapy may help with circulation, stress relief, and certain skin conditions.
