An Afternoon in Meiji Jingu

The magnificent Shinto shrine at the heart of Tokyo

The Meiji Shrine is one of the most popular shrines in Tokyo, completed in 1926 and dedicated to the spirits of emperor Meiji and empress Shoken. They are held in the highest esteem by Japanese people for stimulating industrial growth and leading the modernization of Japan.

The shrine is located at the heart of a beautiful, quiet forest that will make you feel like you are in the countryside, just moments from the modern cafes of Harajuku and the City of Tokyo. The forest covers about 700,000 square-meters and counts more than 120,000 trees. Its mature forests creates a very soothing atmosphere, far from the busy streets and sounds of the city. This is a common feature among Japanese Shrines, as most of them are located into deep forests to allow prayers to completely cut themselves from the rest of the world and pray with a clear mind.
